Earlier this year I was lucky enough to get the chance to work with the great people over at Take Care to create the branding for their latest community endeavour, Weakenders Run Club. They were in need of an identity that championed taking it slow sometimes and welcomed runners of all levels to join in.

A selection of mood board illustrations I looked at for inspiration (Pinterest)

After some research into existing brands and athletic inspiration, I suggested using a rabbit as the primary symbol for the club. Cute, agile, and sometimes speedy, we felt they represented more than just a sport, but could act as an emblem to represent those in the club.

Rough drafts of the rabbit logo resulted in something a little too fast. While undeniably sporty (those are polarized Oakleys, right?), this early rendition (above) didn’t capture the spirit of the open-to-everyone club that we wanted. Even the sharp sans typeface felt a touch too neat and tidy for this identity. I went back to the sketching phase to try a more static and cutesy approach.

Trying out a different approach to the rabbit symbol

The final identity

The final Weakenders logo strikes the level of friendliness and approachability that was so key to this group’s identity as a run club, while still capturing dynamic movement in a simple and scalable symbol. I had a blast working with negative space to bring this concept to life, and it’s been really rewarding to see the community building and success of the club in their 2024 season.
